Gregory sat in Troy’s Leimert Park bachelor pad, hot under the collar with a cold beer in hand. As his brothers high-fived he looked on dispassionately.

“Did you see that?” Michael exclaimed, talking about how his client Huang Chin, the newest NBA darling from China, now playing with the Nevada Nighthawks, had just blown back Kobe’s would-be three-pointer. The ball now nested somewhere between the tenth and eleventh row of the Staples Center’s lower level. “My man is fire.”

“You’re not as excited about that block as you are about the dozens of would-be sponsors who just saw it,” Troy commented.

“True that. If he ends the year as the team’s MVP, it will pretty much seal the deal I’ve got going with EAE. That, my brothers, will make me a multimillionaire.”

“What’s EAE?” Troy asked.

“East Asia Electronics, the newest Asian electronics outfit that is blowing well-known companies off the map. They are interested in a deal that will feature Chin in commercials all over the world, including Asia and Europe. This will set him up for life long after basketball.”

“Looks like you’ll be pulling in more paper than if the doctor here gets the grant. What do you think about that, Greg?” No response. “Yo, G!” Troy threw a wadded up piece of paper at Gregory. “I know you’re not that interested in that soda commercial.”

Michael concurred. “Please, bro has been looking at the screen for the past ten minutes and hasn’t seen a thing. What’s up?”

“I bet I know,” Troy said, his voice teasing. “His new sweet had a run-in with Lori.”

This got Gregory’s attention. “What do you know about it?”

“You know Lori and Lisa have no secrets between them, and Lisa tells me everything.”

“Yeah, now that Michael’s married, you’re her new ‘best friend.’” Gregory encapsulated the last word in air quotes, showing how much he believed that’s all they were.

“So, Michael,” Troy continued, ignoring Gregory’s taunt. “What do you think about Gregory’s latest candy, Anise from Kansas—”

“Omaha,” Gregory corrected, with a scowl.

“He says they’re not serious. Says she’s staying next door at his neighbor’s house.”

“Was staying; she moved over the weekend.”

“I made the mistake of mentioning her to Lori, who promptly went over there and threw a hitch in the giddyup.”

“Damn. You do know everything.”

“Homegirl is hella jealous. . . .”

“Lori?” Michael asked, to make sure he was following this circuitous story.

“Right,” Troy continued. “Went over to Gregory’s house unannounced. Meanwhile sweet thing comes over for some afternoon delight—”

“Wrong. She came over to share some good news.”

“Oh, is that what they call it in Omaha?” Gregory’s scowl deepened. Troy bit back a laugh. “So Lori was upstairs, right? She came down looking all tossed up and you can just about imagine what his new sweet was thinking.”

Michael looked at Gregory with compassion. “Dude, you’ve got to get on top of your game!”

“I don’t have a game,” Gregory said, not finding anything funny anywhere in the situation, though both his brothers’ humored looks showed that he was alone in this position. “And I’m not seeing Lori.
